Obvious Coherence

I like the word cohere for this type of work.

For starters, it has not just an orientation towards wholeness, but towards making sense as a whole.

Secondly, part of my feeling about this work is captured in the wordplay: co-here. We’re both here. I’m not interested in a frame where I’m over here, being a coach, and you’re over there, being a client. I can’t fix you, I can’t change you. There’s nothing I can do to you that’s going to take you where you want to go. But we can create a interactions that make new things possible for you (and me too). If we’re both here for it.

The space we’re making here, in Obvious Coherence, is a space where

  • we’re allowed to see what we see

  • we’re allowed to know what we know

  • we’re allowed to want what we want

So often, we get conditioned very early on to not perceive certain things that the people around us don’t want perceived, to not let ourselves know things that would be disruptive to know, to not want things that would be painful or disruptive to want. When these habits go unquestioned our whole lives, we end up ignoring most of what’s obvious in the world, because it feels threatening to be with the obviousness of what we see.

And even when we are able to begin seeing what we see, knowing what we know — it’s terribly difficult to take the next step, of bringing that into contact with the world around us. To know what we know while being in connection with our friends and family. To want what we want while navigating coworkers and bosses.

Obvious Coherence is a place for developing that muscle memory. For unearthing what’s obvious in your experience, and for staying with it in the presence of another person.

Meeting formats are individual and intuitive — with one client I might spend the whole session in conversation, with another we might do somatic meditation or craft a ritual for them or do some energy healing. I might suggest mantras or I might suggest they bake a meal for their parents. Often, to approach what’s obvious and get around the conditioned defenses against it, we have to come in sideways, or do something a little unexpected. Other times, we just have to be willing to take a deep breath and cry for awhile. It varies.
